چکیده

Many applications have used a Head-Mounted Display (HMD), such as in virtual and mixed realities, and tele-presence. The advantage of HMD systems is the ease of feeling a 3D world in the display of animation or movies. However, the field of view (FOV) of commercial HMD systems is too narrow for feeling immersion. The horizontal FOV of many commercial HMDs is around 60 degrees, significantly narrower than that of humans. In this paper, we propose a super wide field of view catadioptrical head-mounted display consisting of an ellipsoidal and a hyperboloidal C U N ~ mirror. The horizontal FOV of the proposed HMD is 180 degrees and includes the peripheral view of humans. It increases reality and immersion of users. As well, the central region (60 degrees) of the FOV can measure 3D distances using stereoscopics.

Ultra-wide FOV Retinal Display

Currently available screen and retinal head mounted displays have insufficient field of view to fully exploit many virtual and augmented reality applications. Screen based displays suffer from weight and size restrictions as the image sources, electronics, and viewing optics need to be head mounted. Retinal displays need only the scanning and optical delivery components to be head mounted, but ...

A Nonobscuring Eye Tracking Solution for Wide Field-of-View Head-mounted Displays

We present a solution for integrating a binocular eye tracker into current state-of-the-art lens-based head-mounted displays (HMDs) without affecting the available field-of-view on the display. Estimating the relative eye gaze of the user opens the door for HMDs to a much wider spectrum of virtual reality applications and games. Further, we present a concept of a low-cost head-mounted display w...

A Superwide-FOV Optical Design for Head-Mounted Displays

We present a new optical design for head-mounted displays (HMD) that has an exceptionally wide field of view (FOV). It can cover even the full human FOV. It is based on seamless lenses and screens curved around the eyes. We constructed several compact and lightweight proof-of-concept prototypes of the optical design. One of them far exceeds the human FOV, although the anatomy of the human head ...

Subjective Image Quality Assessment of a Wide-view Head Mounted Projective Display with a Semi-transparent Retro-reflective Screen

This paper reports on a wearable Hyperboloidal Head Mounted Projective Display (HHMPD) and two user studies on the evaluation of visual quality of a wearable HHMPD. Using a hyperboloidal mirror, an HHMPD can provide a wide field-ofview (FOV), a large observational pupil, and optical see-through capability. We propose a simple head attached screen that is both retro-reflective and semi transpare...

Adaptive Image-Space Sampling for Gaze-Contingent Real-time Rendering

With ever-increasing display resolution for wide field-of-view displays—such as head-mounted displays or 8k projectors—shading has become the major computational cost in rasterization. To reduce computational effort, we propose an algorithm that only shades visible features of the image while cost-effectively interpolating the remaining features without affecting perceived quality. In contrast ...
